Ray Roberts Team Hollywood are AYGP Skipper & Yacht of the Year
Ray Roberts remarkable success on his new TP52 Team Hollywood stems from winning all the IRC 1 races at the Cape Panwa Hotel Phuket Raceweek, 2nd place at the China Cup, six out of nine races at the Phuket King’s Cup, nine out of ten races at the Royal Langkawi International Regatta and clean sweeping all eight races at the Top of the Gulf Regatta. Although some regattas are low scoring events, with less than five yachts in the class, there is a possibility of exceeding Neil Pryde’s highest tally of 84 points during the 2011-12 season, that took 11 regattas to amass. This achievement is why we unashamedly claim that the AYGP is the “Hardest sports trophy to win in Asia”.
By winning all seven Far East 28R class races at the China Cup, 2nd place at the Subic Bay Cup Regatta and clean sweeping the Chairman’s Cup, with 11 wins out of 12 races, lifts Emerson Villena’s Standard Insurance – PSA2, to the second best team in the 2018-19 Rankings. Showing that this is possible from the Sportsboat class and after competing in only three regattas.
By reducing the number of events they contest in their retirement year, the reigning 2017-18 Champions, Fred Kinmonth/Nick Burns GTS 43 Mandrake III, still hold onto 3rd overall and could reclaim second spot at the season ending Samui Regatta.
Victory at the Chairman’s Cup brings George Hackett’s Mills 43 custom Misty Mountain, upward in leaps and bounds. After the Subic Bay Cup Regatta they took a massive leap from 99th place to 30th place and after triumphing at the Chairman’s Cup, they move from 30th to 9th best team in Asia.
Although we already know the AYGP champion, a strong lineup for the season ending Samui Regatta will be celebrating the new home at Synergy Samui Resort from 25th May to 1st June and culminate in the combined presentation of the 2018-19 AsianYachting Grand Prix (AYGP) Skipper and Yacht of the Year awards.
