Another superb day of racing at Chairman’s Cup…
The two big boats, George Hackett’s Mills 43 custom Misty Mountain and Noel Chan’s HH42 Rampage II are evenly matched and concentrated on each other throughout the races, but with local knowledge in abundance and quicker boat speed Misty Mountain, came out on top in both races. Although the top mark was moved in the first race and announced on the radio, some confusion reigned and Jun Avecilla’s Beneteau First 36.7 Selma Star, Albert Altura’s Beneteau First 40 Hurricane Hunter and Peter Capotosto’s Beneteau First 31.7 Selma going around the wrong mark and were disqualified. Avecilla’s Selma Star made up for the mistake in the next race, to slot into 2nd place and missed out by 5 seconds on toppling Misty Mountain but sandwiched themselves between 1st and Rampage II in 3rd place.
It’s quite evident that the experienced Emerson Villena’s Standard Insurance – PSA2 and Ridgely Balladares on Standard Insurance – PSA1, have a slight speed edge over the other FarEast 28 teams. They engaged in their own pre-race match racing duel and cover every move on the race track. Despite this duel taking place, it seems to urge each other on, at the front of the pack. Although conceding three races yesterday, Balladares Standard Insurance – PSA1 came out on top in the first race today, but there was no let up by Villena’s lighter Standard Insurance – PSA2 crew, to win the next two races and take a commanding overall lead in the one-design class.
With a 3, 3, 4 score line Maria Evildoer – Hagedorn Subic Sailing Club seems to have the measure of Yukie Ikawa’s Team Turquise Japan and have closed to within one point of the Japanese, in the fight for 3rd overall. With a row of 5th places China’s Ren Fei on China Cup Ning Boo Fish Yacht Club remain in 5th overall and happy to consistently beat Alein Choi’s Team Poeima Hong Kong in 6th and Richard Lin’s Team Taiwan Keelboat Ass. (TKBA) in 7th overal.
The RS One and RS Foilers also completed their series, much to the delight of the spectators in front of the Lighthouse Sail Village.
