2017/18 AY Grand Prix Event

Brisk conditions get the Chairman’s Cup underway…
By AY MultiMedia
27th April 2019, Subic Bay, Philippines:
Unfortunately the lack of available crew, has further reduced the IRC fleet to five yachts. Undeterred the fleet were sent on a 21nm harbour course and as the prevailing ENE breeze, oscillated between 12 to 15 knots, with gusts up to 18 knots, even the small yachts finished the long race before 1400hrs and PRO Jerry Rollin forged ahead with four windward/leeward races, for the seven FarEast 28R One-Design Class, in quick succession. The Optimist, Streaker, Oz Gooze Dinghies and junior Windsurfing classes, successfully completed their two day series yesterday and made way for the RS and RS1 foiling classes today, who also enjoyed the brisk conditions to complete three races. Check out some of the action in the

Noel Chan’s HH42 Rampage II were off to a good start and powered away into the lead, but being unfamiliar with the Subic Bay buoyage system, looked as if they were on the way back to Hong Kong and opened the door for George Hackett’s Mills 43 custom Misty Mountain to reel them back in, take over the lead and never looked back. Jun Avecilla’s Beneteau First 36.7 Selma Star also capitalised on the Rampage II mistake, to slot into 2nd place in the handicap stakes and relegate them to 3rd overall. Albert Altura’s Beneteau First 40 Hurricane Hunter never recovered from the late start and had to settle in 4th place.

Emerson Villena’s Standard Insurance – PSA2 had the perfect start to the regatta with four wins in front of rival Ridgely Balladares on Standard Insurance – PSA1, to take revenge from their loss at last months Subic Bay Cup, in the highly competitive one-design FarEast 28 class. Mixed results down the order, saw Yukie Ikawa’s Team Turquise Japan, rack up three 3rd and one 4th place, to take 3rd overall. Some protests are in the process of being sorted by the International Jury, which provisionally leaves Maria Vidoeira – Hagedorn Subic Sailing Club in 4th, China’s Ren Fei on China Cup Ning Boo Fish Yacht Club in 5th, Alein Choi’s Team Poeima Hong Kong in 6th and the easily excitable and spinnaker less Richard Lin’s Team Taiwan Keelboat Ass. (TKBA) in 7th overall

All the yachts have been awarded PY handicaps based on their measurement certificates and included in the Cruising Class results, to give the sole entry Peter Capotosto’s Beneteau First 31.7 Selma some relevance and something to judge their performance by.

Although the winners of the RS X Men, RS One Women, Optimist, RS One Men, OZ Goose and Streaker classes have won with several first places, there have been at least one or two shockers down the order and the timings don’t reflect the closeness of the racing. Although the Macau and Singapore teams pulled out because of the earthquakes, the racing went on unhindered in fresh breezes and the sailors will be better off with the experience, especially with the SEA Games just around the corner.
