20+ knots ruffled the feathers on Bass Harbour
The two TP52’s fully powered up and scorching their way through the pack, are a sight to behold. In these conditions Kevin Whitcraft’s older generation TP52 THA 72 is no match upwind, for Ray Roberts newer generation TP52 Team Hollywood and consequently Team Hollywood has won all 8 races by one or two minutes. The older boats, Dato Khalilur Rahman’s DK 46 Janda Baik skippered by Khairul Zakaria and the Royal Malaysian Armed Forces DK47 Uranus skippered by Mohd Masyuri and the Farr 520 Zuhal, skippered by Norhafisam, are holding their own grudge race, as they can’t match the TP52’s in planing mode and speed, in any conditions.
On the first race today, Scott Bradley’s Sydney 40 East Marine Emagine, won the start and raced away in clear air, plus extended their lead at every mark, to look like the race was done and dusted, but when the IRC ratings were applied, Vincent Chan’s Titan 36 Mata Hari came through to claim victory by a mere 3 seconds. The Russians on Alexey Mashkin’s Cookson 12m MegaZip, slotted into 3rd place and on the long downwind and reaching second race, came through for victory by 43 seconds, to maintain 2nd overall. With the Japanese on Kazuki Kihara’s First 40.7 Char Chan not starting today and Bradley’s East Marine Emagine 3rd place in the second race, it moves them up into 3rd overall in the standings. Second place and not finishing worse than 3rd place, in all 8 races, Chan’s Mata Hari has established a 4 point cushion at the top of the IRC 1 class, but with two races scheduled on the final day tomorrow, they can’t rest on their laurels.
Stuart Williamson’s First 34.7 APW Endeavour of Whitby, with Tom Slingsby calling the shots, claimed both race wins today and extend their lead in the IRC 2 class by 3 points. Two 2nd places for Niels Degenkolw’s X 3/4 ton Mk2 Phoenix, could scuttle their chances of winning an eighth class title this year. Jeremy Camps Impala 28 OOD The Blue Angel and Richard Morris Schock 35 Salina maintain 3rd and 4th places respectively.
Three races today for the Sportsboat class. Apart from 2nd place in the first race, Muhd Uzzair Amin’s MSA Team are on a roll and by posting two more wins, have extended their lead by 6 points and wrapped up the title, with one day to spare. Harisfabillah’s Navy 1 have maintained 2nd overall and opened a 5 point gap with 3rd placed Rizal Mahadi Sazli (Tom) Royal Selangor Yacht Club Team, and with only one race scheduled on the final day tomorrow, that’s the order they will end in.
Overnight repairs to John Newnham’s Twin Sharks mainsail and with renewed confidence, got them off to a flying start and managed to eclipse Dan Fidock’s Moore 36 Fugazi by 2 minutes in the handicap stakes. The long running and reaching legs favoured Fidock’s Fugazi and came storming home at 20+ knots, to reverse the order and stay on top of the Multihull class standings by 2 points. Bob McIntyre’s Stealth 13 Allegro is no match for the dueling leaders but continues with some bursts of speed, in the heavy going conditions.
By posting two wins today the Malaysian Armed Forces Contessa 32 Marikh, skippered by Hasani Hassan, have regained the lead in the Club Cruising class. Third and fourth places for Tristram Denyer’s Baveria 37 Iseulta drops them to 2nd overall but 3 points is a lot to make up on the last day of racing. Fourth and second places for Rama Menon’s Dehler 38 VG Offshore, keeps them within striking distance of 2nd place but will have to watch out for Keith Miller’s Harmony 38 Sade 2 closing in from 4th, only 2 points behind.
Both A’dale Adham Ayahudin’s Oyster 55 Chantique and Datuk Richard Curtis’ 100 year old Bristol Pilot Cutter Eveline, recorded wins today, but 2nd place for Chantique keeps them at the top of the Ocean Rover class. Third place for Eveline, leaves them 3 points adrift from Chantique and although Jack Christensen’s Bavaria 49 Linda, is applying pressure from behind, their late arrival missing the first race and disqualification will leave them in 3rd overall.
Last day of racing tomorrow and as the brisk NE’ly is forecasted to continue, some gains and losses in most classes, will determine the final outcome.
