PEMSEA E-Update for January 2019

Welcome to the first e-update of 2019! Towards the end of 2018 our Sixth East Asian Seas Congress saw delegates from throughout the region and the world congregate in Iloilo City to discuss how to secure healthy and sustainable oceans, people, and economies, and how to move as one with the global ocean agenda. Many of the proceedings from that event are now available.

Transition Point, From Steam to the Singularity

This is a very important book that asks and answers some of the most important questions of the century and should be widely read because it covers subjects that affect everyone, but where vested interests have been keen to avoid debate. The history of the world has seen a handful of events in many thousands of years that change the direction of human life. There will be debate as to exactly when this latest stage of human revolution began and exactly where we are in its cycle, but no one can argue that it is not a significant change in the fortunes of the human race. – Most Highly Recommended

Jean-Luc Van Den Heede wrote his name into the record books by not only winning the 2018 Golden Globe solo non-stop round the world race today, but becoming the oldest in history to complete such a race. The 73-year old French veteran of six solo circumnavigations takes over both titles from Britain’s Sir Robin Knox-Johnston, the sole finisher of the Sunday Times Golden Globe Race 50 years before. Until the finish gun fired at 09:12 UTC, Sir Robin had held the title as the oldest solo circumnavigator in a race, after completing the Velux 5 Oceans Race in 2007 at the age of 68.
