Day 16: Golden Globe Race – Philippe Péché leads fleet away at start

Day 16 – Dateline: Rubicon Marina, Lanzarote Canaries. 16. July 2018

French leader Philippe Péché and his Rustler 36 PRB is being pushed hard by Dutch rival Mark Slats (Ophen Maverick) as the Golden Globe Race fleet enjoy glorious trade wind conditions on the run south towards the Cape Verde Islands. They and 3rd placed French veteran Jean-Luc Van Den Heede, 30 miles astern of the leading pair, and all racing identical Rustler yachts, have been touching speeds of 8knots at times under spinnakers overnight.

Wärtsilä to assist Transocean with thruster maintenance optimisation and dry-docking cost reductions

Wärtsilä and Transocean will optimise the maintenance of all Wärtsilä thrusters installed within the Transocean fleet, while seeking to significantly reduce dry-docking costs by extending the service intervals of the thrusters. The agreement aims to deliver fewer interruptions to operations, which will result in benefits for both parties.

At 04:34hr on Sunday 15th July 2018, UK Coastguard requested the launch of Seahouses All Weather Lifeboat, to assist the North East Ambulance Service to reach an ill male, in need of urgent medical care, on Holy Island. The Causeway was closed by the tide. The next safe crossing time was after 09:00hr. As the ambulance dispatched was from a nearby Ambulance Station, it was directed to Seahouses Lifeboat Station.

Golden Globe Race – Day 12 – Philippe Péché drama at Lanzarote turning mark

He is still in first place, but French Golden Globe Race leader Philippe Péché threw away a hard-fought 3½ hour lead at the first gate in this 30,000 mile solo non-stop round the world race today after mistaking the lighthouse marking the southern end of Lanzarote today.

Wärtsilä signs a EUR 170 million scrubber deal

The year 2020 is approaching along with the Sulphur cap regulation of 0.5%, putting pressure on maritime agents to decrease emissions – and to utilise new innovations for environmentally sound vessels and services in the marine industry. A major European container shipping company has ordered Wärtsilä’s hybrid exhaust gas cleaning equipment and retrofit services to its container vessels, worth EUR 170 million.
