2017/18 AY Grand Prix Event

The balmy tropics strike again…

12:01:2018 Langkawi, Malaysia: Overnight the rain petered out and by morning clear sky and a light North Easterly breeze greeted the sailors at breakfast time. Friday being the day off in Langkawi, the breeze also decided to take a break and the postponement flag went up to hold everyone ashore, while PRO Simon James and his race team scoured both the outside course area and Kua Harbour for any sign of wind. For 4 1/2 hours the radio crackled with direction changes and reports of 1 to 2 knots. Lunch came and went as the bar trade increased, then finally the call went out that 5 to 6 knots from the East had arrived and a course was hastily set in the channel in front of the yacht club. Racing finally got underway with short windward/leeward courses for the IRC classes and passage race for the cruising classes. Half way through the breeze dropped to 4 knots and by the time it finished the call was ‘No more racing today’. Check out the action in the AY Photo Gallery


Although Philip Turner’s Reichel-Pugh 66 Alive reveled in the light conditions for line honours, Kevin Whitcraft’s TP52 THA 72 came out on top in the handicap stakes, to extend their overall lead in the Racing class and defend the title with a day to spare. Alive held on for 2nd place, while the Royal Malaysian Armed Forces Sail Association DK47 Uranus skippered by Salleh Ahmad, slotted into 3rd place and maintain 2nd overall in front of Alive, coming into the final race day tomorrow.

Coming into today’s race, Vincent Chan’s Titan 36 Mata Hari KL Registry and Kazuki Kihara’s First 40.7 Char Chan were tied on 6 points for the overall IRC 1 lead. Vincent Chan used match racing blocking tactics at the start line and pulled away into the lead. Geoff Masters Mills 41 Meraki led the fleet around the course, while Mata Hari KL Registry and Char Chan sailed in close company and covered every move. At the end Mata Hari KL Registry came out on top of Char Chan in the handicap stakes, to record their third win in a row and take a one point overall lead. Third place for Meraki consolidates 3rd overall and all to play for tomorrow.

Having worked out the secrets of asymmetric spinnaker racing, Amir Zohri’s J92 S RSYC Nijinsky led the IRC 2 fleet around the course, but Niels Degenkolw’s X 3/4 ton Mk2 Phoenix closed in on the dying stages, to claim their fifth win in a row and the IRC 2 title, with a day to spare. Things got worse when Jeremy Camps Impala 28 OOD Old Pulteney Blue Angel crossed the line 9 minutes latter and claimed 2nd place by a mere 2 seconds, relegating Nijinsky to 3rd.

At the start today, Robert van Paridon’s 12.81m trimaran Tantrum Too and Gerhard Pils Pulse 600 Fetz Ma were tied on 6 points. Gerhard Pils and Fetz Ma will have to be called the giant slayer, for correcting out in front for the second race, in as many days and takes a one point lead over Tantrum Too in the Multihull class. Third place for Bob McIntyre’s Stealth 13 Allegro is a model of consistency for 3rd places and with a bit more speed could play a part in the outcome but will have to settle on 3rd overall.

The Japanese on Yasuto Fuda’s Yamaha 31 Fortissimo X are on charge and by winning again today and dropping a 7th place, have climbed up into 2nd overall in the Club Class. Sixth place for the current leader, Stas Pechenkin’s Jeanneau One Design Southern Breeze 3 has narrowed in the scores and now only two points in front of Fortissimo X. Second place for Ramasamy Menon’s Dehler 38 VG Offshore are now tied with Tristram Denyer’s Baveria 37 Iseulta for 4th place, with Philip Auger’s Davidson 35 Sophia only two points in front of them in 3rd place. With the performance based Time Correction Factor (TCF) juggling the places, this class is still open for the taking.

Triumphing today, Jack Christensen’s Bavaria 49 Linda bought A’dale Adham Ayahudin’s Oyster 55 Chantique three race winning streak to an end and are one point behind and within striking distance of claiming the Ocean Rover title. Second place for Bernard Di Tullio’s Indulgence helped reduce the points difference and relegated Chantique down to 3rd place today. As the legend onboard Chantique says ‘It’s never over, till its over’ and being one who can see the wind, will be going all out for victory.

Final day of racing tomorrow and hopefully the wind gods will cooperate and produce an exciting finale to this years 16th edition.
