AY Race Report 1
Opening day full of surprises…
By AY MultiMedia
January 26th, Batam, Indonesia: What started off as flat as a pancake, soon turned into a frenzy, as the dark clouds over Johore descended over the Singapore Strait. Thankfully for the most part, the rain stayed on the Singapore side and the fleet benefited by having three windward/leeward races in 10 to 12 knots, that backed between races from NE to North. Although a bit rusty on the first race, quite a close tussle developed between the leading yachts in the next races. The Optimist and Laser dinghy’s also started their series and enjoyed the brisk conditions outside the marina.
Making a fist of it, Kurt Metzger’s Nelson 10 Waka Tere won all three races and although the score line doesn’t show it, by the smallest of margins. Although Gordon Maxted’s Young 88 Shoon Fung Too dipped in form on the second race, but two 2nd places on either side, gets them off to a good start in 2nd overall.
The Singapore Management University (SMU) teams were keen to get going, while Bernice Foo Ling Li’s Platu 25 SMUVE pushed the leaders and ended up in 3rd overall, Koh Ling Ying’s Platu 25 SMUMAD were called over the start line, on the first two races and by failing to return were scored OCS. They rebounded with 2nd place in the third race but are disappointed with second from the bottom of the score sheet on opening day.
Christian Mark Chang Kah Fai’s Shengli, did the best of the J24’s and ended up 4th overall at the end of the day. Although Justin Lean’s Mumm 30 Invictus led the fleet for most of the races, they finished up with an 3, 7, 5 score line for 5th overall and hope to find top gear tomorrow.
According to the Windguru weather forecast, tomorrow is expected to be the windiest of the 3-day regatta and by the looks of the entertaining welcome party tonight, everyone is getting into full swing.
