AY Pre-Regatta Report
Welcome to the 3rd Nongsa Regatta
By AY MultiMedia
January 25th, Batam, Indonesia: Ever since the Indonesian President Joko Widodo, changed the cruising permit system and relaxed the entry on visiting yachts, Nongsa Point Marina & Resort on Batam Island has become the Western gateway for entry and departure plus enabled them to organise a variety of races and cruises in the Riau archipelago. Severe restrictions in Singapore waters, has forced the racers across the Strait, to the open expanse of water outside the marina.
Hence the 3rd edition of the Wonderful Indonesia Nongsa Regatta, held at the peak of the NE monsoon season, has attracted 10 yachts split into 2 classes, 30 dinghies (20 Optimist & 10 Lasers), 10 radio controlled boats, plus 20 Jet skis contesting the 2 stage Round Batam Endurance Race, over 3-days.
The Singapore Management University (SMU) are back in force with two Platu 25’s, Bernice Foo Ling Li skippering SMUVE and Koh Ling Ying on SMUMAD.and three J24’s, Christian Mark Chang Kah Fai’s Shengli, Lukman Nurhakim Samad’s Balqis and Rebecca Goh Su Min on the Class B defending champion Quarterdeck.
They will be coming up against some stiff opposition in, Justin Lean’s Mumm 30 Invictus and long time supporters of regional regattas, Kurt Metzger’s Nelson 10 Waka Tere with the SMU alumni onboard, Gordon Maxted’s Young 88 Shoon Fung Too and Simon Piff’s Lauranus L34 Rainbow Dream, are always threatening for the top podium places and have battled it out till the end, on many occasions.
Graeme Hespe’s CS36 Jens Jaunt is the only entry in the PY class and although the Windguru weather forecast is not as strong as last year (Goto AY Photo Gallery), all sailors big or small, young or old, can expect the North East trade wind, with gusts in the mid teens. This is normal for this time of the year and will produce for everyone, some exciting sailing action.
