It maybe a coincidence, as the revised SFR results were posted, on the same day as Team Sun Hung Kai/Scallywag announced they will represent Hong Kong, as the fifth entry on the 2017-18 Volvo Ocean Race. The campaign is backed by Lee’s Sun Hung Kai & Co., and aims to promote competitive sailing in Asia and build a long-lasting youth sailing legacy in the region. Hong Kong will be a Host City in the Volvo Ocean Race for the first time in the 2017-18 edition, starting in October.
The revised SFR results extends Anthony Root and Steve Manning’s, Ker Custom 42 Black Baza unbeatable lead, in the 2016-17 AYGP Skipper and Yacht of the year awards. The downwind flyer, can now claim double, IRC 1 line and overall class winner, on all four major Asian offshore races in the past two years. Overall champions on the 2015 Hong Kong to Vietnam Race, 2016 Rolex China Sea Race, 2017 Hong Kong to Hainan Race and now the San Fernando Race to their trophy haul. As this has never happened before, it can be added to the archived RHKYC race records as an exemplary achievement.
Meanwhile we’re all presently getting ready for the final showdown, at the season ending Samui Regatta next week and will recalculate the pointscore based on the Scallywag withdrawal asap.
The AYGP is a unique point scoring system, that annually ranks all the big boat Skippers and Yachts that race in Eastern and South East Asian waters. Presently regattas in Thailand, Malaysia, Philippines, Indonesia and Hong Kong, are point scoring events. So far this season 226 Skippers and 227 Yachts have contested at least one event and comes to a conclusion, at the gala Samui Regatta prize presentation party, at the Centara Grand Beach Resort, when Black Baza skippers, Anthony Root and Steve Manning don the Trend Fashions navy blue blazer, presented with the Perpetual AYGP Cup filled with champagne and the hand crafted take home trophy, for becoming the 2016-17 AYGP Skipper and Yacht of the Year, is the highlight of the AYGP season.
