Commodore’s Cup – It all comes down to boat speed…
By AY MultiMedia
30th March 2016, Subic Bay, Philippines:
Although the big breeze yesterday has moderated, there was still enough for PRO Medy Fidel, to run 2 x 2nm windward/leeward races for the Racing Class and a single 19nm Point to Point race for the Cruising Class. The Racing Class jostled for position in the starting box and were eager to get clear air and hit their target speeds. No room to dip below the line, forced
Steve Manning/Anthony Root’s Ker 42 Black Baza over the line, when the starting horn sounded and had to return to restart. Once again the battle for line honours between Geoff Hill’s Smith 72 Custom Antipodes and Ernesto Echauz’s TP 52 Standard Insurance Centennial III broke out in close quarters and was sorted on the downwind leg, when Standard Insurance Centennial III has a slight speed edge, only for Antipodes to come back on the windward legs.

Commodore’s Cup – AsianYachting Race Report 1

By nature of size and performance, the racing class circulated in a two by two formation. Geoff Hill’s Smith 72 Custom Antipodes and Ernesto Echauz’s TP 52 Standard Insurance Centennial III, fighting it out at the front. Not far behind, Steve Manning/Anthony Root’s Ker 42 Black Baza and Fred Kinmonth/Nick Burns Sydney GTS 43 EFG Mandrake have the pedal flat on the floor. Leaving Martin Tanco’s Sydney 46 Centennial II, keeping the pressure on from the back.Several big wind gusts produced some out of control broaches on the downwind and unintentional round ups to windward. Hill’s Antipodes claimed line honours in 2hrs 43mins 12sec’s with Echauz’s Standard Insurance Centennial III, a little over two minutes behind. But when the IRC ratings are applied, it’s EFG Mandrake that claims the handicap stakes by a mere 15 seconds, from Black Baza and relegated Standard Insurance Centennial III down to third place, Antipodes in fourth and Centennial II fifth. At the evening awards party, everyone agreed that it was a great race to open the regatta with.Despite the hangover from last nights welcome party, Jun Avecilla and the crew on his Beneteau First 36.7 Selma Star put in a sterling effort, to claim the daily double in the Cruising Class. Still getting familiar with the boat, Viggo Lisson and the Philippine crew on the Beneteau First 31.7 Selma had to settle on second place. Late to start, Garry Kingshott’s Fusion 40 catamaran Kerida, made up ground around the course but fell short of making an impression for third place. Racing continues tomorrow with two windward/ leeward races for the Racing Class and another point to point race for the Cruising Class. If the wind is still blowing the birds out of the trees, Medy Fidel has already decided to lengthen the courses for both classes.More news, race info and photos goto Subic Sailing and Commodore’s Cup on FacebookGoto AY Pre-Regatta ReportAll the 2015-16 AY News, Views and Race Reports Here…This 2016 Commodore’s Cup – Race Reports are kindly bought to you by the following supporters
