It has been said the that closure of FAA and RAF SAR Sea King flights was a necessary cost cutting exercise, but closure of these valuable services was a cheap price cut. The final costing may be an increase because reducing SAR cover leads to increasing loss that more than cancels any price reduction. Some of that loss is human life which is priceless.

Eastern delivers first in a series of Z-Tech tugs; Gulf Island to acquire LEEVAC assets

December 30, 2015—Eastern Shipbuilding, Panama City, FL, reports that it delivered the escort tug Triton to Suderman & Young Towing Company earlier this month. The vessel is one of a series of Z-Tech 2400 class terminal and escort tugs designed by Robert Allan Ltd of Vancouver, BC, that are currently under construction at Eastern’s Nelson Street Shipyard.

On the fifth day of the Rolex Sydney Hobart Yacht Race, the lion’s share of the fleet has rounded Tasman Island, passing the spectacular Organ Pipes rock formation and approaching the mouth of the Derwent River.  The finish line, just off Constitution Dock in Hobart, is abuzz with activity and the anticipation continues to build as the marina fills with race yachts.

Vigor gets go ahead for fourth 144-vehicle ferry; New Year brings new IMO requirements

December 29, 2015—Washington State Ferries is starting off the New Year with construction of a new Olympic Class ferry. The agency last week signed a Notice to Proceed giving shipbuilder Vigor Industrial the go ahead to get started on work on the fourth vessel in the 144-vehicle capacity ferry series and work will begin in January. The new ferry is funded through the Connecting Washington transportation package which is being paid for through a hike in state gasoline taxes.

The 90 ft inland towboat is the sixty second vessel in an ongoing new build program for Florida Marine Transporters, Inc., Mandeville, LA, that now totals sixty-five vessels contracted over the last 10 years — the largest single builder, single owner, new construction program with the same class towboat design in U.S. shipbuilding history.
