EPIC WORLDS REWIND
With Ocean Reef and Lake Garda, Italy serving as previous hosts of Melges 20 World Championship, The San Francisco Yacht Club (SFYC) was the logical choice to carry the torch and provide another amazing experience for Melges 20 sailors. With near perfect conditions on the final three days of racing, San Francisco Bay delivered 14-22 knots and steep waves that allowed for tight racing and downwind rides – exactly what the Melges 20 was designed for. The SFYC went above and beyond for the sailors, providing an epic World Championship (free Lagunitas IPA on tap and a steady pour on the Stella Black), raising the bar once again for future host venues.

Highlights of the event include John Kilroy on Samba Pa Ti claiming his second consecutive World title, Cesar Gomes Neto on Portobello finished off a solid two years of Melges 20 Class sailing taking home a second place trophy, and the young Liam Kilroy on Wildman showed a huge improvement since his first Worlds in Lake Garda, completing the podium with an impressive scoreline that included 3 bullets.

The Corinthian World Championship title was fully up for grabs with Paul Currie’s Wild Deuces team taking the early lead, only to be passed by Oleg Evdokimenko on Kotyara. It was rumored the Russian team, which included Aleksandr Andrianov and Konstantin Besputin, cradled their new crystal trophy as the “World Corinthian Champion” through the airport as their carry-on, re-defining the term ‘precious cargo’.

WE WANT YOU! 2016-18 INTERNATIONAL BOARD CALL FOR NOMINATIONS
The time has arrived to elect new Melges 20 Board members, and the good news for the fleet is that Donald Trump is not on the ballot…as of yet. The International Audi Melges 20 Class Association (IAM20CA) is now accepting nominations from anyone wishing to serve as a board member of the class.

All seats, six total, are open for nominations – 3 for NA (includes Canada) and 3 for Europe. In addition, two Ex-Officio members will be elected – one from Japan and one from Russia.

The call for nominations began on October 1, and will close on Sunday, 1 November 2015.

At that time, all nominations put forth will be collected and placed within an online voting system (electronic balloting), in which each owner will be permitted to cast a vote. The voting period will will commence on Wednesday, 04 November 2015 and close on Sunday, November 22. This method is the same as used two years ago. It will be communicated in advance of the vote, who the candidates are as well as the process for voting.

Please send your nominations to your respective class secretaries:
North America
Europe
Please send nominations for the Russian Ex-Officio Member seat to the European Fleet Secretary, and send nominations for Japan’s Ex-Officio Member seat to the International Class Admin.

CLASS GENERAL MANAGER APPOINTED AT 2015 AGM
In an effort to put board initiatives into action and actively address any issues that arise with the Class, long-time Melges 20 sailor Sam Rogers has been appointed as the Class General Manager. “I am excited about the opportunity to promote the growth of the Melges 20 class, and work on behalf of the owners, IM20CA Board, and sailors to ensure the fleet stays healthy and vibrant for years to come.”

MEASURED TO A “T”
Quieting any concerns with regards to boats being altered from their original measurement certificates, a diligent measurement process took place at the World Championship coordinated by International Chief Measurer Egidio Babbi and U.S. Measurer Dave Lemere.

The results – after weighing and measuring the fleet, the weight of every boat was within 1% of the mean average. A tolerance amongst the fleet of 1% is impressive to say the least, and the team at Melges led by Andy Burdick and Harry Melges work hard to ensure that every boat leaving the factory is in perfect condition. The Melges 20 Class is fortunate to have a reliable, committed builder to continue the growth of the class.
