AY Race Report 3

Good days & bad days, fill the mid-regatta report…
By AY MultiMedia
May 27th, Koh Samui, Thailand: Don’t the skippers love it, when the crew are in sync and the maneuvers around the course are executed with precision. As opposed to a few mistimed decisions and fumbles, that result in the yacht struggling down the order. Good example, is the training on Sarab Singh’s newly acquired Windsikher II opening with 2nd and 1st to lead on Day 1. Unfavourable conditions and a couple little errors sneaking in, saw them finish with 3rd and 2nd on Day 2 and almost loosing the lead. A slow start for Peter Ahern’s syndicated TP52 Oi! possibly due to not racing since Langkawi in January, saw them languishing back in last place, but 2 wins yesterday, lifted them to second in the overall standings and smiles all round. Similarly in IRC 1, Bill Bremner’s defending champion Foxy Lady 6 started slowly but leapt into the lead on Day 2 and continues to improve as the days go by.

Crude tankers prosper, at least for now

Dalibor Gogic, Principal Analyst, IHS Maritime & Trade

27 May 2015

Key Points:

· The crude tanker market looks firm for 2015, although a rise in tonnage could raise concerns for the next year.

· Today’s health tanker earnings are underpinned by two years of moderate vessel supply

· IHS Fleet Capacity Forecast data shows that 1,860 vessels are now in service across all size segments, amounting to a fleet of about 350 million dwt (deadweight tonnage)

· With 24 VLCC delivered last year, the fleet remained very much under control, although Kuwait and China, added four and three tankers, respectively.

· 2014 also marked a record peak in contracting activity with 21.5 million dwt on the books, of which 66% is expected to enter the market during 2016.

· These orders – almost evenly distributed across the three major segments: Aframax, Suezmax, and VLCC – could herald a turning point. Out of the 111 units ordered in 2014, 37 were for VLCCs and placed by well-known players such as Navig8 (10 units) and China Merchants Energy, which ordered 5 units during Q3, 2014.

· The orderbook for the rest of 2015 still looks moderate with only 70 expected completions, including 23 VLCCs and 37 Aframaxes.

May2715-viewimage

Foil sailing is attracting sailors from around the world, who are now competing in three dimensions on foiling multihulls like the GC32s. From May 27th to May 31st, five professional teams will race these catamaran hydrofoils on Lake Traunsee in the Austria Cup, the first grand prix in the Bullitt GC32 Racing Tour 2015. Ever since the pre-event took place in Marseille a month ago, Spindrift racing has adopted the new boat as its own, painting her in the team’s livery. At the helm, Yann Guichard is clocking up the flying hours, and has put together a crew consisting of Olympic sailors, with a skill set that combines both precise manoeuvring with physical power. Yann has put together a crew that will go from strength to strength on this new European circuit, but the team face tough competition, so the key is to invest as much effort as possible in the first events.
