Tanker collides with on-trials car carrier
December 30, 2013—A chemical tanker that collided with a newbuild car carrier and caught fire could break in two, Korea’s Arirang News today quoted officials as saying. The officials said that the tanker had been left with a large hole in its side. The car carrier, the 55,700 gt Gravity Highway is under construction at Hyundai Mipo for Israel’s Ray Shipping. It was on shipbuilder’s sea trials some 9 miles off Busan when the collision took place at 2:15 local time, according to media reports.
Expedition ship still iced in
Although an Australian and a Chinese icebreaker have been dispatched to the scene, weather conditions have thwarted efforts to free the ship.
Two arrests follow North Sea ferry cabin fire
Two men were arrested by U.K. police after the DFDS Seaways cruise ferry King Seaways was forced to return to port in Newcastle after a fire broke out in a passenger cabin when the ship was 30 miles off the U.K. coast en route to Amsterdam.
Under-construction semi sinks at shipyard
Norway headquartered Odfjell Drilling reports that on December 28 the semi submersible offshore drilling rig Deepsea Aberdeen, currently under construction at Daewoo Shipbuilding and Marine Engineering (DSME) in Korea, experienced water ingress on a pontoon while moored at the shipyard’s quay.
