The action on Rhode Island Sound was fast and furious on the penultimate day of the 2013 Rolex Farr 40 World Championship in Newport, R.I., as the 15 teams contesting the 16th edition of this championship were challenged by three races sailed under a low cloud ceiling. The first race started in 12 knots of steady breeze from the north-northeast, which increased over the three races to 17 knots.

Hornbeck completes sale of tugs and barges
August 29, 2013—Hornbeck Offshore Services, Inc. reports that it has closed the previously announced sale of substantially all of the assets and business of its Downstream segment’s tug and tank barge fleet to Genesis Marine, LLC, an affiliate of Genesis Energy L.P., for cash consideration of $230 million. The Downstream vessels sold to Genesis comprised Hornbeck’s active fleet of nine ocean-going tugs and nine double-hulled tank barges.

August 29, 2013 brought a lot of tropical activity back to the Eastern Pacific Ocean. Late on Aug. 28, Tropical Storm Juliette formed just west of the coast of Baja California, Mexico, and two other low pressure areas developed south and southeast of the storm. NASA’s Aqua satellite captured Juliette and the low pressure areas in infrared imagery.

LCS 4 completes acceptance trials
August 28, 2013—Naval Sea Systems Command (NAVSEA) says that the future USS Coronado (LCS 4) successfully concluded acceptance trials August 23, after completing a series of graded in-port and underway demonstrations for the Navy’s Board of Inspection and Survey (INSURV). Acceptance trials are the last significant milestone before the delivery of the ship to the Navy, which is planned for later this fall.
