Clipper Race to start and finish in capital with fleet based in St Katharine Docks

St Katharine Docks, in front of Tower Bridge, Mayor of London Boris Johnson and Clipper Race founder and chairman, the legendary yachtsman Sir Robin Knox-Johnston

London is to host the start and finish of the 2013-14 edition of the Clipper Round the World Yacht Race, leaving the capital on 1 September 2013 and not returning until July 2014 after racing 40,000 miles visiting 14 ports on six continents in the world’s longest ocean race.

It’s Friday! It’s pre-Race day!

Merry Conceit, winner of the first RTIR in 1931.

The first race took place in 1931 with 25 entries and it was indeed one of the smaller boats that won. The successful skipper, Peter Brett, competed in a 22 foot Cornish fishing boat Merry Conceit. He had bought it, in partnership with his friend Henry Trefusis, from the builders in Looe, for the sum of £45. Credit: Kirk of Cowes.

This unit comes with a long carbon arm and the assembly weights only 200 g!

RTI Race yachts are converging on Cowes

Ray Moxley has just brought his newly built 40′ revolutionary catamaran RA into Cowes from Plymouth where it was recently launched. Not only has Ray drawn every inch of this remarkable boat and overseen its construction, but he will also be celebrating his 90th birthday just three weeks after this, its maiden race on Saturday. The Race organisers at the Island Sailing Club are fairly sure that he is the oldest competitor in this year’s Race, and possibly in the history of the event.
