If you’ve been coming to the Club the past few days, by now, you are already seeing the 38 men’s and women’s RS:X Windsurfers taking over the lawn and lower deck. The ISAF WORLD CUP MIAMI is about to begin! This is the first competition for the International Olympic sailing fleets to compete in a qualifying regatta for the Rio Olympics 2016. And with the RS:X announcement a few months ago that this fleet WILL be going to Rio in 2016, the CGSC will again be hosting the the RS:X Men’s & Women’s windsurfing event with our very much welcomed back Principle Race Officer, John Craig (now, PRO for the America’s Cup, and formerly PRO from St. Francis Yacht Club), who will be with us at the helm once again calling the race course dynamics. (See speaker’s notice in box below.)

Come on by and watch these outstanding athletes on the water if you can, along with all the other 9 Olympic fleets, or just stop by and see how committed every sailor is to this event, restarting this “quad” – 4 years till the 2016 Rio Olympics – to competing on their way into the final selection process beginning in 3.5 years.

And most important! DO NOT FORGET the speaking engagement of John Craig, as mentioned in the article block below, for his update on the America’s Cup! Lots of great stories to hear from this PRO!

Come on down to the Club and be a part of this world class event.

AMERICA’S CUP UPDATE!
Meet John Craig
Principal Race Officer of the AC 2013
January 29, 2013 @ 1900 hrs. – Upstairs Rm.

America’s Cup – San FranciscoJohn Craig – America’s Cup PRO
John Craig has come to the CGSC almost every January since 2006 to be the PRO for the previously titled: “Rolex Miami Olympic Classes Regatta” in the Windsurfers circle, which CGSC runs every year.

America’s Cup Logo
John was hired by the America’s Cup in 2011 to become their Principal Race Officer for the 2012/2013 America’s Cup Series. He comes back this January during a break of AC racing to run the the newly renamed, ISAF Sailing World Cup Miami, presented by US Sailing event once again.

Think of all that’s happened since AC 42’s racing began nearly two years ago: the 13 ft. Whaler salvage claim regarding the French AC45 Cat in San Francisco Bay, the Oracle 72 ft. Cat pitchpole and drift out into the Pacific with the ebb, status of repairs, new boat and new wing(s), the spy allegations, the performance of ETNZ and Luna Rossa in NZ sailing tests on their 72’s, resignation/dismissal of Terry Hutchinson from the Artemis team, what if there aren’t two 72’s fit to sail when the finals roll around, etc.

Should be very exciting. From a race management standpoint, this effort, headed by John, is at a whole different level – remote positioning of Mark Boats, etc. The rest of us can barely fathom the new technologies embedded into this regatta. Is John on the racecourse or in a control room??
