Henry Strzelecki MBE – Obituary

Mr Henry Strzelecki MBE

Henry Strzelecki, who died on Boxing Day aged 87, was known universally as “Mr. Henri”. He devoted much of his life to the benefit of others. Born in Poland, he became as English as the next man in his adopted city of Manchester. The transformation was neither easy nor immediate, but it was determined; he did not, however, shun his native land as could be evidenced by some of his later business developments.

Day 2 of the 2012 Rolex Sydney Hobart has so far played out as predicted. The largest yachts have profited hugely from the overnight swing in wind direction to the northeast; one yacht in particular. At 17:30AEDT five-time Rolex Sydney Hobart line honours winner, Wild Oats XI, lay about 40 nautical miles ahead of her own record pace as she closed on Tasmania. In the process, she has brutally exposed the shortcomings of her competitors in straight-line speed sailing, even drawing out a 50nm lead over fellow maxi Ragamuffin Loyal.

FLIGHT SOUTH – Rolex Sydney Hobart Yacht Race

2012-26118 0 2 photo SYHO12cb 06681

The 68th Rolex Sydney Hobart got underway in exceptional conditions. The forecast southerly breeze providing the perfect angle for a spinnaker start and run down the harbour. The angle would prove less kind as the yachts exited the Sydney Heads and made their turn towards Hobart, finding the 20 – 25 knots now firmly on the nose. Mark Richards and Wild Oats XI looked to be in no mood to be interrupted in her bid to claim a sixth line honours, blasting off the line and showing Syd Fischer’s Ragamuffin Loyal a clean pair of heels before popping out of the Heads comfortably in the lead.

Christmas Day swim in aid of Ballycotton lifeboat

Ballycotton lifeboat crew watch over swimmers

Event: Christmas Day Swim
Location: Garryvoe Beach, East Cork

For some the Christmas Day swim has become a tradition. This is a bit of fun that has raised money for charities over the years.
The annual Ballycotton lifeboat Christmas Day swim took place at Garryvoe Beach in East Cork. John raised the lifeboat flag at 7:30am heralding the event that was to take place in a few hours time. It was a fine sunny day and the cars started arriving at the beach from 11:00 am. By 11:50 the car park was full. For some the dinner was in the oven and they were taking time out to support this hardy band of people. For others, they were taking a detour on their way home from Mass. Wherever they were coming from this was not a day to be late. The fun starts at 12 noon on the dot.
