ocean racing yachts taking part in the Clipper 11-12 Race as the

With the Leg 2 Global Ocean Race (GOR) winning Class40, Cessna Citation, safely secured by a network of lines and springs at Queens Wharf in Wellington Harbour, the strong winds still persist in and around Cook Strait. As Conrad Colman and Sam Goodchild crossed the finish line late on Friday evening (local), thundering into Wellington Harbour under bright orange storm jib and reefed main, the second-placed Class40, BSL of the New Zealand father-and-son duo, Ross and Campbell Field, was approaching Cape Farewell, 110 miles north-west of Wellington, preparing to turn right, into the teeth of the gale for a beat through Cook Strait.

After the Australian teams claimed the bonus points for first and second to reach the Race 7 Scoring Gate, Qingdao has claimed the final point on offer, reaching the gate in the Coral Sea just 27 minutes ahead of Singapore in fourth place.

Sam Goodchild and Conrad Colman: Leg 2 winners with Class40 Cessna Citation

At 08:20:40 GMT (21:20:40 local) on Friday 30 December, the youngest team in the double-handed, Class40 Global Ocean Race (GOR), 28 year-old Kiwi, Conrad Colman and his 22 year-old, British co-skipper, Sam Goodchild, crossed the GOR’s Leg 2 finish line in Wellington Harbour, New Zealand, in first place on their Akilaria RC2 Class40, Cessna Citation after 30 days 22 hours 20 minutes and 40seconds, netting the maximum of 30 points for Leg 2.

In the GOR’s 21:00 GMT position poll, Conrad Colman and Sam Goodchild are leading the fleet to the Leg 2 finish line on Cessna Citation averaging 9.7 knots in Cook Strait with just 54 miles remaining. Ross and Campbell Field on BSL in second place are in the Karamea Bight, south of Cape Farewell, averaging 5.4 knots with 134 miles of Leg 2 remaining.

A changing of the guard will take place at Royal Bermuda Yacht Club (RBYC) on New Year’s Day when Peter Shrubb’s two-year term as club Commodore officially expires. The highly-respected international sailing umpire, who officiated at several world-class regattas this year, will step down to make way for Jonathan Brewin who is the club’s current Vice-Commodore.
