Newport, RI – USA – After one full day of racing at the 2011 Melges 32 North American Championship, hosted by Sail Newport in Newport, R.I,. twenty-year-old Ryan DeVos along with tactician Ed Baird on Volpe is officially in charge. Leading by an impressive 8 point margin, DeVos currently reigns over Rod Jabin on Ramrod with tactician Chris Larson in second, and Alexis Michas on Zetiana with tactician Brian Ledbetter is third. “Fortunately, we just happened to be in all the right spots. Today was all about location.” said DeVos.

Perth, Western Australia: Global marine safety equipment provider, Mobilarm Limited has welcomed the International Telecommunications Union’s (ITU) decision to amend its Recommendation ITU-R M.585, concerning identities of AIS-SART, EPIRB-AIS and man overboard (MOB) devices, at a meeting in Geneva on 23rd June 2011. The amendments address the regulatory issues of allocating MMSI (Maritime Mobile Service Identity) numbers to MOB devices, which has impacted the adoption of sophisticated new personal safety devices.

Nordic American Tankers Ltd. (NYSE:NAT) – Increased Fleet and Increased Dividend/Earnings Capacity.

Nordic American Tankers (the Company) today announced that Nordic Breeze, the first of the two vessels under construction at Samsung Heavy Industries Co., Ltd., is expected to be delivered to the Company August 23, 2011. This is more than one month earlier than expected.

The second vessel, Nordic Zenith, is expected to be delivered to the Company in the latter part of October 2011 which also is well in advance of the original schedule.

Antarctic fuel oil ban and North American ECA entry into force

Amendments to IMO’s MARPOL Convention for the prevention of pollution from ships enter into force on 1 August 2011, banning heavy fuel oil from the Antarctic and creating a new North American Emission Control Area (ECA).

 

Use or carriage of oil in Antarctic Area

A new MARPOL regulation to protect the Antarctic from pollution by heavy-grade oils is added to MARPOL Annex I (Regulations for the prevention of pollution by oil), with a new chapter 9 on Special requirements for the use or carriage of oils in the Antarctic area.

Porthcawl lifeboat launched to Mayday

Swansea coastguard received a Mayday call from a 26foot fishing vessel taking in water off Nash Sands in the Bristol Channel. Porthcawl’s RNLI Atlantic 85 ‘Rose of the Shires’ was launched at 08.38 to assist the 4 persons on board the vessel which was in immediate danger of sinking following engine failure which had blown a hole through the hull.
